Four ways to sort your yarn

Organise your storage around the way you look for yarn. Here are four ideas to start with, at home and in your digital yarn register.

By colour

Keep similar colours together to spot combinations for stripes, patterns and leftover-yarn projects. The yarn wall gives you a visual overview.

By fibre and yarn weight

For example, keep wool, cotton and sock yarn in separate groups. In the yarn register, filter by fibre and category when looking for materials.

By needle size and gauge

Group the yarn wall by needle size, stitches or rows. This makes it easier to compare yarn details before starting a new project.

By storage location

Label boxes and baskets with simple names, such as Box A. Add the same name to the yarn entry so you can go from the photo to the yarn.

Start with one box

Organise your yarn stash, step by step

You do not need to register everything at once. Start with the yarn for your next project and add more at your own pace.

  1. 1

    Gather and sort

Take the yarn out of one box. Keep matching yarn balls together and separate different dye lots.

  2. 2

Take a photo and keep the label

Photograph the yarn and enter its name, colour, dye lot, fibre and quantity. Use the label to capture the yarn details.

  3. 3

    Give your yarn a home

Label your storage and save the location on the yarn entry. Then you will not need to search every box.

  4. 4

    Keep quantities up to date

When you use yarn in a project, record the amount used. This makes it easier to see what is left for your next idea.

Frequently asked questions about organising yarn

What is the difference between the yarn register and the yarn wall?

The yarn register holds details such as quantity, fibre, dye lot and storage location. The yarn wall displays your yarn as images, grouped by colour, needles, stitches or rows.

Can I keep track of leftover yarn?

Yes. Record small quantities too and update what is left. A photo and a clear storage location make leftovers easier to find for your next project.

How can I start without registering my whole stash?

Choose a few yarns you want to use soon. Start with a photo, name, quantity and storage location. You can add more details later.
